Kaohsiung City is the second largest city of Taiwan with an estimated population of 1.5 million. It is the center of manufacturing, refining and transportation. The completion of their mass rapid transport system the KMRT is expected to be completed by end of 2007. The construction of the KMRT had its fair share of negative publicity since building began in 2001 due to accidents and slave labor. Kaohsiung City will host the World Games in 2009.
